Matthew 16:13-16English Standard Version (ESV)
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
In this passage, Peter quite clearly declares that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and yet, not too long after this, Peter quickly denies he knows Jesus to save his own skin. We are often a little disappointed in Peter, to say the least, but we shouldn't be so quick to jump to judgement, because as often as we ourselves declare Jesus to be the Christ,m the Son of the living God, we also deny knowing any such thing....not in words, but by our actions.
It isn't enough to simply say "Jesus is Christ". We are not just called to declare this, but to believe it and then, because we believe it, follow the Way Jesus set before us. If we're not doing what Jesus did or what Jesus said to do, we're denying Christ....just like Peter.
So today, answer Jesus' questions. "Who do people say I am?" And, "Who do YOU say I am?" Then ask if your lifestyle, behaviors, attitudes and actions prove your answer, or deny it. If your answer is an honest, "I don't know" to either question, it's time to have a conversation with someone else who knows Jesus, and to break out your Bible and discover for yourself, who Jesus is.
